The increasing number of wireless devices congests the available radio frequen-cies. To cope with this increasing demand, new frequencies are allocated to fu-ture communication technologies (5G). The challenge then is to design antennas that can also cover these new frequencies. The laws of physics already limit the obtainable antenna performance. Antenna designers should find new solutions to answer these future challenges.

This thesis introduces the concept of the antenna cluster, where the idea is to feed several different antenna elements simultaneously. The goal is to cover a wider range of frequencies than would be possible with a single antenna of the same size. The research started with a mathematical analysis on multifeed antennas, and lead to antenna prototypes implemented in mobile phone size, whose opera-tion was then experimentally characterized.

An antenna is converts a high-frequency signal in a conductor to an electromag-netic wave propagating freely in the air and vice versa. The actual signal genera-tion and detection in modern wireless devices is done with integrated circuits. The introduced antenna concept is investigated also from the perspective of these integrated circuits. Based on the results, the antenna concept is realizable with modern circuit technology. The results also provide new perspectives for antenna design.
